Why “Not Being Naked” Is Not Enough

What You Wear Matters Buddy. In this day and age just throwing something on to cover your more private regions is simple not enough. You have to dress the part in everything you do and project the right brand image. A good solid brand starts with a good, solid and relevant image designed to fit well with specific situations. Simply “Not Being Naked” is no longer enough.

Why Do We Wear Clothes?

Outside of certain beaches in France, it is a given that we should be wearing some form of clothing which forms the basis of a modern, decent society. However, these days it is simple not enough to “avoid being naked” and what you wear is of upmost importance so take off the dressing gown, put on a pair of pants and find that other sock.

Your Personal Brand

Today, big brands like Nike and Coke are dominant in the world but many people overlook their most important brand of all. Brand “Them”. Your brand is how you come across to the people you interact with in this world and the first port of call to a good personal brand is how you dress. First impressions are important, and this starts visually before you even open your mouth. How you present yourself to the outside world starts with your wardrobe and is usually one of the most important decisions you can make in starting the day, business and life.

Being The Right Person Starts With Looking Like The Right Person

How you project your own personal brand onto the world will and should be adaptable to the situation. For example, a dressing gown and boxer shorts is perfectly acceptable for a lazy Sunday afternoon though it would be frowned upon within a board meeting. This, of course, is an extreme example but how many times have you actually thought hard about what brand you are projecting and taken the steps to project that brand to others.
I will illustrate my point through an example from my own life. I have two companies currently, one a internet trading company and the other a go-getting branding firm.
This morning I had a business meeting with a potential investor for my internet trading company and so the well cut suit, conservative hair and business case I chose projected the brand of a confident and professional young entrepreneur.
In the afternoon I had another meeting with a client for my branding company and because that company is positioned as a young, exciting and mould breaking company a suit would be overkill and would not fit with the brand image. For this meeting I wore a pair of designer jeans, smart brown shoes, a colorful t-shirt and a blazer with the hair a bit more choppy to fit with the brand my client would most likely expect from a young branding exec.
As I write this post I am heading to meet up with some mates in Leeds for a drink and a weekend social and so am more dressed down due to the fact that entering a pub in either a suit or smart casual dress is not going to project the right image.

Brand You Is Important

From this example you can hopefully start to see that importance of the brand image you project through the clothes that you wear. Obviously changing clothes multiple times a day is not always practical or even necessary but it is worth taking a few extra minutes in the morning working out not only what looks good but also what is going to project the right brand for the people you are likely to meet during the day.
You brand is important and needs to be carefully nurtured. This starts with what you wear and the visual aspect of your brand that you project.

  1. Thanks, Jonny! I’ve actually been spending a bit of time thinking about this recently. Really feeling that I would probably project a more consistent ‘brand,’ visually, if there was more cohesiveness between my site design, the photos found there and what I wear day-to-day. I appreciate the food-for-thought!
