The Advantages of Shiatsu on Your Health

Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese healing art that is both a preventative healthcare system and therapeutic intervention. It is used to treat a wide range of conditions from sports injuries to chronic health problems and depression. Shiatsu enhances general health and vitality while stimulating and supporting the body’s natural healing processes. Shiatsu therapy is a deeply relaxing experience the leaves the client with a profound sense of well-being. Little wonder, that it has become one of the most popular types of complementary therapy in the Western world.

Therapeutic Shiatsu massage is a form of acupressure and is based on the theoretical and philosophical framework of Oriental medicine which considers illness to be the result of imbalances in the natural flow of energy through the body. The word Shiatsu, which means finger pressure, was not coined until the 20th century, when a Japanese physician integrated a form of traditional massage, which was being practiced in homes throughout Japan, with a modern understanding of anatomy and physiology.

Shiatsu is similar to acupuncture in that it prevents and treats health problems by correcting energy flow throughout the body. Acupuncture accomplishes this by inserting needles into specific points on the body’s meridian lines or energy channels. But unlike acupuncture, Shiatsu corrects the flow of energy through gentle non-invasive touch.

The hands of the Shiatsu therapist are the tools for both diagnosis and treatment. An experienced practitioner has the ability to assess a person’s level of health through the medium of touch. They use their sensitive fingertips to detect subtle changes in the client’s vitality, distinguishing differences in temperature and stiffness. Pressure is then applied to the appropriate acupressure points using the tips of the fingers, the palms of the hands and occasionally the forearms, elbows, knees and feet if necessary.

There are close to seven hundred of these points on the body’s energy meridians that correspond to the muscles, nerves, bones, blood vessels, and glands that lie below the surface of the skin. Pressing on these points relieves energy blockages and stimulates the body’s natural recuperative powers.

During a therapeutic massage session, the therapist provides information aimed at increasing the client’s awareness of the various lifestyle practices and circumstances that can block the flow of energy and they offer specific health improvement suggestions based on their diagnosis.

A study conducted by the School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds in the UK, found that this practice significantly improved the health literacy of Shiatsu clients, empowering them to make the lifestyle changes that would improve their health and wellbeing.

The health advantages of Shiatsu are many and varied. The physical benefits include: relieving aches, pain and stiffness in muscles and joints; easing menstrual and digestive problems; speeding recovery from sports injuries, repetitive strain injuries or injuries such as whiplash; helping to detoxify the body; and helping to improve body awareness, breathing and posture.

Psychologically, Shiatsu can aid in releasing stress or emotion, resolve anxiety or depression, and help you through difficult transitions in your life. At the very least, Shiatsu will leave you more relaxed and better able to cope with life’s challenges.

  3. I totally understand the benefits of using the hands to move energy around the body. Reiki is another practice that works only with the energy and the hands never touch the body.

    I have never had accupuncture before but I would like to try it.
