Life Imitating Art
You know how they say that art imitates life, well in my case it is the opposite. You see, I am a writer at heart. I have immersed myself in stories for many years, living my life through the characters. The lonelier and more difficult my life became, the deeper my stories got, filled with relationships and romance that was absent from my own life.
Now, for reasons I do not want to get into at the moment, I had not had a real date in… well, forever. In fact, I hadn’t had a real date since high school, not to mention a real, adult romantic relationship! So, in lieu of this I created elaborate fantasy worlds where the hero and heroine lived lives full of action, adventure, and romance.
Now, a little more than a year later I am in a great relationship full of real romance and love. If you are wondering how I met the love of my life, I am not embarrassed to admit it was through online dating. While neither of us were expecting much to come of it, having both been put off by the dearth of suitable matches, we thought we could at least meet. About five minutes into the date we knew we had something special. While we would typically both be running for the hills after a shared cup of coffee, we instead lingered for hours talking about our hopes and dreams.
Getting back to my point… Since the holiday season was coming around and my fantasy stories were set during that time, I had the urge to go back and reread what I had written. I nearly fell down in shock.
Keep in mind that I had no idea what a real adult relationship looked or even sounded like before I met my love. I had no friends with a successful relationship and my parents were not a great example either. However, as I reread the pages upon pages of relationship and romance between the hero and heroine I saw startling similarities to my current relationship: the same insecurities and fears, the same trepidatious confessions, the same fierce loyalty and devotion and unexpected love.
The one thing that makes me laugh the most is the word by word dialogue that matches everyday conversations between my partner and I. The sort of goofy way we communicate is so close to the characters in my story that I keep having to remind myself that I wrote this long before we ever met.
Who would have thought that the hero and heroine of my stories would have become real, at least in some ways? I certainly did not!
